Research Assistants

The Aegis Council creates ideas from research and analysis to support governments, policy leaders, businesses, entrepreneurs and communities in policy making. We recognize that interns are one of our most important assets and, as such, we offer learning opportunities to support their professional, skills training and career development. 

The Internship Program is an important bridge to future employment allowing interns to better clarify their career goals, develop professional networks with senior policy leaders and increase their skill set required to succeed in a competitive global environment. 

We are currently looking for highly motivated candidates desiring to hone their understanding or display their knowledge and interest in international affairs, public policy, international development and governance to be appointed as Research Assistants who will work remotely. Research assistants provide research and analysis to support the work of the Aegis Council in connecting policy leaders, businesses and communities to the information they desperately need to make decisions.    

If selected, you will have the opportunity to publish well-researched articles (in Aegis Council’s Journal of Commons) that communicate the importance of global issues relating to our policy areas and what policy alternatives can be implemented to address emerging social and economic cleavages.  The Internship focuses on project management that allows interns to work in teams and on their own on assigned projects that advances each intern’s professional development, project management skills and the opportunity to apply academic theory to practice.   

The Internship spans a 5-month period on a full/part time basis and is unpaid. Openings are available throughout the year. Responsibilities

  • Performing in-depth research to write balanced, and accurate text on a variety of international relations topics using a variety of sources;
  • Communicating with and interviewing experts on a wide range of topics;
  • Writing innovative, visually driven content for publication in the Journal of Commons and social media pages;
  • Assisting in event organization;
  • Helping to plan and carry out knowledge translation activities including conferences, workshops and community meetings;
  • Other duties and responsibilities maybe assigned when required.

Qualifications

Reporting to the CEO, the preferred candidates must have aptitude for research and journalistic writing, leading thinkers and actors to understand an issue in depth. Candidates must also be knowledgeable in Canadian foreign policy, international development, public policy, international governance and current affairs, and must be capable of fulfilling the assigned responsibilities.  

Requirements

A bachelor’s degree or master’s in the social sciences preferably political science, international relations, economics, international development, global affairs, public policy or related field of study from a recognized post-secondary institution. OR a degree will be obtained by 2021, from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Competencies

  • Strong analytical and research skills—experience in quantitative analysis is an added advantage; 
  • Knowledgeable in International relations;
  • Desire to perform accurate and ethical research to achieve results;
  • Flexible and able to work alone and as part of research team;  
  • Judgment, analytical thinking and problem solving; 
  • Effective writing and speaking skills; 
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office programs; 
  • Ability to assist in the organic development, social media content strategy and growth of Aegis Council’s social media platforms. 

Work Environment

Research Assistants work remotely and may be required to go to the office if there is a need to.
